Community & Press
Our community of artisans, collectors, retailers, and supporters has continued to develop through many seasons of life at the studio. These special relationships have opened opportunities that have been dreams come true and given us experiences beyond what we ever imagined! We would like to share some of those favorite experiences with you.
C H I C K E N I N T R O D U C T I O N S : For many years we enjoyed exhibiting at local and regional art fairs. Today, people most often meet the chickens through our studio, lifestyle stores, exhibitions, online, and in the homes of our collectors.
C O L L E C T I O N S : To find feather design inspiration we only need to pause and look at the world around us. We have created artful interpretations of real chickens as well as entire flocks inspired by other natural beauties like flowers and butterflies, and other designers including Alexander Girard and the quilt-makers of Gee’s Bend.
C O M M I S S I O N S : Chickens have been invited to live in public spaces including the Ledger building in Bentonville and the Hyatt Centric Downtown Portland, American Century Investments, and commissioned by private collectors all around the world.
C O L L A B O R A T I O N S : We treasure the relationships and artistic growth that have come through working with artists beyond our studio. Our first experience was with fashion designer Whitney Manney creating a collection together entitled, “The Flock That Raised Me.” Another favorite project was one that connected us with six female fiber artists around the world to create, “When Feathers Come Together: A Global Chicken Collection.” Most recently, we fashioned a collection in collaboration with Amalana Felt in Argentina.
C O M M U N I T Y E N G A G M E N T : Sally has had the privilege of visiting many of the wonderful people and places connected to this creative community in person. Some of these visits include our retail partners Baboo, Low Rider, Garde, The Uncommon Home, and Crosell & Co. (Debonnaire and B. Davis Designs still to come!). She also visited a shepherdess and her flock at Full Circle Wool, and many chickens in the homes of our collectors. Sally spoke about the art of chickening formally to local community groups at George Lifestyle, Crossroads Hotel, and Pine Meadow Ranch, and informally to curious new friends at campgrounds along the way. While abroad, she felted alongside several of our collaborating global artists in their studios—what a treat!
C O M M U N I T Y P A R T N E R S : We have held Chicken Raffles to support many non-profit organizations including Reconciliation Services, Powell Gardens, KC Dream Factory, and Horseshoe Canyon Rescue Ranch.
K - S T A T E A P D E S I G N : Our studio’s relationship with the place where the original chickens hatched has continued in special ways. In 2019 we created an exhibition, “The Art of Chickening: 10 Years In,” which included a student chicken design competition. Sally participates annually in graduate seminars about creative entrepreneurship and received the honor of returning as the APDesign commencement speaker in 2023.
P U B L I C A T I O N S : We have been featured and interviewed in the following publications: What Women Create, Create Whimsy, Startland News, Design KC, Folk Magazine, Liminal Space, OFS Imagine a Place, Home & Lifestyle KC, Hello Atelier, Product Design Award EU, Simply Vintage, and Elle Decor.
